(More Mac stuff)
Jun. 23rd, 2008 11:59 pmI postponed the Leopard install further because...
Souping up the power G4 is FUN!
The Mac engineer I met last Christmas gave the machine an overhaul and advised me to keep it forever!
If it was less than the max 20" screen model I'd be looking for a new mac, but the volume and memory (and now processor speed) can be increased considerably. Also there are things I have not even made use of such as the built-in Airport Extreme.
SO :-
I'm awaiting delivery of a 1GB RAM stick to put into the still empty 2nd socket; the machine has run so well on its original memory provision of 512MB RAM I never got round to adding more.
Also the first (engineer-only) slot can be emptied and refilled with a 1GB.
It all adds up to a lot more memory!
* put in the max volume drive (Seagate Barracuda 750GB)
* slot in an Airport Extreme card
* upgrade the processor (expensive, but a lot cheaper than buying a new mac)
later, I may also replace the Pioneer CD/DVD drive and the external hardware if need be. The monitor stays!!!
Its SO lovely
