Image verity
Sep. 5th, 2008 10:59 amThere should really be a mark for indicating to what extent, if any, an image has been altered,
eg
± denoting addition or deletion of elements within the image
§ enhanced pictorially
<> enhanced photographically
followed by a number indicating the degree.
The amount of manipulation that goes on is quite worrying. Its one thing to deal with virtual properties, another to sift the virtualPLUS from the undoctored.
If I'm posting photos, I often change the contrast or exposure settings, or simply hit 'enhance' which takes care of all that quickly (if using a smaller digi- camera). It seems pointless to mess with the actual subject as that will be seen in reality soon enough, plus it smacks of tampering with the evidence.
All the same, people do it not only with their own image, but, of far greater concern, with digital artwork images.
