Non-returnable wildcats
Sep. 14th, 2009 07:03 amHeh. After posting that photo of a rescue tiger last week, suddenly I get news regarding the rescue leopards i worked with in Jan/Feb.
An american, Paul Sudenfield, whom I wrote to about getting them relocated, has just made the cloud forest trek up to where they are and has seen for himself that they cannot really be kept in their small ancient cages. NB there are two leopards that cannot be returned to the jungle. I got particularly close to one of them, Nosara, and have been trying to get better conditions for all the wildcats. Everybody just keeps telling me there isn't the money, but my arguments involve radically rethinking the ways these animals are kept *in the meantime*.
E.g. they need to let Christian the vet put the puma Mito to sleep -- it has stomach cancer! He's prevented by this attitude that it is 'not the Costa Rican way'. I think that's an insult to 'Ticans'.
Anyway, Mr Sudenfield has seen these things for himself and is now in agreement. He got back to the States yesterday. At least its nice to have his support!

Nosara.
=^..^=
PS i notice that the actress Joanna Lumley has made a TV programme about big cat resue! Brilliant! -- i'm going to write to her too! (I didn't see the prog. unfortunately, but no matter).
