'Why Beauty Matters' v 'Nothing Matters'
Nov. 29th, 2009 09:23 amRoger Scruton (BBC 2, 'Why Beauty Matters')
heart heart heart heart heart that man : )
Since last Thursday i've been privileged, again, to gaze rapturously (clichés have their uses) on sculptures by Epstein (currently in the Wild Things show at the RA, previously this year as part of Tate Modern's Futurism show) and I've been left blank by expensive things hanging in White Cube ('Nothing Matters' exhibition).
NB If Hirst were to be tied sitting and force-fed banknotes, photos of this might echo Emin's other-end money feast ('work of Art' photo thereof).
Intuition tells me to stay WELL out of it: i work on my own and about as far from the art-celeb-spotlight as u cn get (e.g. haven't even got a website yet).
My ultimate goal is to convey the cruelty that is rife in the world, whilst creating something that is rewarding to look at.
That whole contemporary clawing for attention / feverish networking / self-publicising arena is anathema; its good enough that a respected few have endorsed my gut-feeling that its worthwhile i carry on.
