A new painting
Mar. 18th, 2008 01:11 pm'Time Passes Slowly (on Transport Ships)'
Acrylic on 500mm X 700mm canvas (same size as the other recent paintings)
This is from certain historical accounts of the atrocious treatment of prisoners at sea (eg 1746 transport of 90 Scots to London. 18 survived the 8 months they were kept in the hold on ballast) I've tied it in with current practice viz animal transportation, but the usual message is--this can and will happen again, given the opportunity.
I owe the central focal point to an invaluable critique by

The (human) Figures---close-ups
Mar. 18th, 2008 03:40 pmThe Figures--anti-clockwise from 8 o'clock
*The man on lower left is choking; in last stages of pneumonia he is drowning in his own lung fluid, gasping for air and contorting in spasm and shock
*Young man top left = consumptive and cannibal
*Next figure = gnawed corpse
*Older man top right = grim determination to survive, or blank madness
*Young man below him = based on Garry Newlove (and goth girl murder) story....has been attacked without restraint and his larynx is massively swollen, so he also is slowly choking to death. He cannot raise himself from the pool he is lying in.
*Muscular man bottom right = cannibal
**There are also horse's and cattle heads in that section, plus various little dogs, baboons, goats etc. and other, previous figures that show thru where the paint is semi transparent.
Its a busy old picture!
