Here's a quite important thing that Andy Gambino (mac engineer) told me, that is good fr PC users too. Go into preferences on Photoshop and other big file apps. and where the scratch disc is specified, don't use yr main drive. Select another drive partition or an external. That way all the files don't get written to ur start-up disc all the time, causing it to frag up.
I usually just use iPhoto actually.
*do not snigger if u know this and its like OBVIOUS.... i am a self-taught computing person and am constantly on a learning curve-- I probably have gaps in basic abc.
E.g. not knowing what *that key with the arrow on it* was for : /
